How to Report and Fix Duplicate Content in Google

How to report and fix duplicate content in Google. Duplicate content can negatively affect your website’s SEO performance and can lead to confusion for search engines.

How to report and fix duplicate content?

What is duplicate content?

Duplicate content occurs when different pages from the same website or from different websites display identical or very similar content.

Google does not apply direct penalties for this type of content, but it can negatively affect ranking in search results.

Common types of duplicate content

  • Different URLs that return the same content (e.g.: with or without www, HTTP vs HTTPS)
  • Filter pages in online stores
  • “Print” type pages or AMP/desktop versions
  • Content copied from other websites without permission
  • Articles republished on multiple websites without significant modifications

Risks of duplicate content

Although Google automatically manages a large part of duplicate content, there is a risk that:

  • Wrong pages may be indexed
  • Page authority may be split between multiple versions
  • Valuable content may not be displayed in results
  • Your website may be reported for copyright infringement

How to detect duplicate content?

  • Google Search Console: Check reports in the section “Pages” – “Duplicate without user-selected canonical”
  • Screaming Frog: Identifies pages with identical titles, meta descriptions or body text
  • Siteliner, Copyscape or Plagiarism Detector: Identifies internal or external duplication

How to fix duplicate content?

1. Using the canonical tag

Add the tag <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.goai.ro/pagina-originala/"> in the page header to tell Google which is the preferred version for indexing.

2. 301 redirects

Redirect duplicate pages to the original page using 301 redirects to consolidate SEO authority.

3. Content consolidation

Combine similar pages into a single one with valuable and original content.

4. Correct use of URL parameters

Avoid creating multiple versions of the same page due to parameters (e.g.: ?sort=asc, ?page=2).

Configure parameters in Google Search Console or use canonical.

5. Noindex for unimportant pages

Add <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> to pages without SEO value (e.g.: print versions, internal search results).

6. Avoid duplication in category and tag pages

Especially on WordPress platforms, manage taxonomies and avoid content overlap between categories and tags.

How to report duplicate content copied by other websites?

If someone has copied your content without permission, you can file a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) complaint:

  • Access the Google reporting form
  • Complete the information about the original content and the copied one
  • Submit the request to remove copied pages from Google’s index
